Eight people were killed in one San Diego County brush fire, authorities said Sunday, raising the overall death toll in California's siege of wildfires to 11.
The eight deaths all involved the so-called Cedar Fire in the Ramona-Lakeside area northeast of San Diego, Sheriff Bill Kolender said.
The fire has charred some 90,000 acres since Saturday. At least 100 homes have burned there.
"This is a very dangerous fire. There have been eight people confirmed killed and several more cases being investigated as we stand here," Kolender said.
Two of the victims were found in a car that was caught in flames. The circumstances of the other six deaths at the Cedar Fire were not immediately clear.
"People in the cars who had smoke problems, people who didn't get out of their homes in time, people affected by the smoke, people affected by the fire - various reasons," Kolender said.
Elsewhere, one man was killed in the Paradise Fire in San Diego County's Valley Center Area, and two elderly men died from stress-related causes in San Bernardino County's Waterman Canyon area when fire roared into a neighborhood.
