Iraq Sunnis say might still back constitution

August 29, 2005

BAGHDAD (Reuters) – One of Iraq’s biggest Arab Sunni
parties said on Monday that it might back the draft
constitution but still wants changes.

“We have not signed the constitution and we still have the
time starting from now until the referendum comes. We might say
yes to the constitution if the disputed points are resolved,”
Tareq al-Hashemi, spokesman for the Iraqi Islamic Party, told a
news conference.

After weeks of wrangling, Iraqi politicians delivered the
charter to parliament on Sunday but without the support of any
Sunnis, whose community is the seat of the insurgency.

The Iraqi Islamic Party withdrew its candidacy from January
elections due to lack of security in Sunni regions. They are
seen as moderate Islamists who oppose violence.
