Oklahoma State University is opening its doors to help currently enrolled university students who have been affected by the Hurricane Katrina disaster. If you or your friends are aware of students who may want to transfer to OSU for one or more semesters to continue or finish their studies, please have them or their parents contact the Office of Enrollment Management at (405) 744-4366. Graduate students can contact the Graduate College at (405) 744-6368. OSU is waiving tuition and fees for students from New Orleans-area colleges.
In addition, several OSU students from the affected areas or have relatives and friends there may need counseling or assistance. Those students can contact University Counseling Services at (405) 744-5472. Counseling Services offers counseling by appointment and also has emergency on-call counselors. The phone number is the same for both services.
In a letter to the campus, OSU System CEO and President David Schmidly said, “This is an extraordinary situation that demands extraordinary measures, and we will do everything we can to assist those who have been the victims of this tragedy. I ask for everyone’s cooperation and assistance in this time of need.”
OSU also announced that some 150 volunteers will be taking donations at the Cowboys’ football game with Montana State Saturday evening to assist those devastated by Hurricane Katrina.
“Oklahomans know how to respond to those in need and OSU wanted to help in any way we can,” said Schmidly. “We’ve all been touched by the catastrophic effects of the hurricane, and we are pleased to work with the American Red Cross to reach out to the nearly 50,000 Cowboys fans coming to Boone Pickens Stadium.”
OSU student and faculty volunteers will be collecting donations in nearby parking lots and around the stadium. Inside Boone Pickens Stadium, volunteers will be situated at special collection stations on both the ground and mezzanine levels on the south side of the stadium. The university does not normally seek donations in stadium parking areas but is making an exception Saturday because of the magnitude of the need.
Checks should be made to the “American Red Cross,” and please write “OSU-hurricane relief” in the check’s memo line.
Volunteers will be wearing special Pistol Pete-Red Cross t-shirts and carrying American Red Cross containers.
“We want to thank our volunteers, and we hope everyone will consider making a donation to this important relief effort,” Schmidly said.
