WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Congress will include disaster aid for U.S. farmers, including those hit by drought in the Midwest, as part of spending bills to aid recovery from Hurricane Katrina, the Senate Agriculture Committee chairman said on Thursday.
Chairman Saxby Chambliss also said he expected a delay in work on $3.1 billion in agriculture budget cuts because of the focus on mammoth hurricane damage. The cuts were ordered earlier this year as part of an effort to cut the overall federal budget deficit.
"We will have an agriculture disaster portion" in the post-Katrina spending bills," said Chambliss, Georgia Republican, in response to questions from farm reporters. He said it was too early to estimate farm losses.
