STRASBOURG, France (Reuters) - There is no evidence so far to back allegations that the CIA ran secret prisons in Europe, the EU's top justice official said on Wednesday, appearing to contradict Europe's human rights watchdog.
"At the moment, there is no evidence confirming the allegations made," EU Justice and Security Commissioner Franco Frattini told the European Parliament.
His remarks come just a day after Swiss senator Dick Marty, looking into the scandal for the 46-nation Council of Europe human rights watchdog, said that information gathered to date had reinforced the credibility of the allegations.
Frattini said he would fully support the Council of Europe probe by providing satellite images and flight information.
Pressure is growing on Washington and European governments to explain dozens of flights criss-crossing the continent by CIA planes, some suspected of delivering prisoners to jails in third countries where they may have been mistreated or tortured.
