Two ex-NFL players killed in Los Angeles car crash

December 15, 2005

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Two former National Football League
players were killed on Thursday when their speeding car slammed
into an empty bus, possibly as they were racing another vehicle
on a Los Angeles street, police said.

Police declined to release the names of the men but local
media identified the passenger as 29-year-old Darrell Russell,
a former defensive tackle with the Oakland Raiders, Washington
Redskins and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Authorities said the 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix struck a curb
around 6 a.m. local time, clipped a fire hydrant and smashed
into the bus, which was not in service.

Firefighters worked for more than 20 minutes to pry the men
from the car before taking them to local hospitals, where they
were pronounced dead.
