Tug sinks off North Carolina, two dead

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A tug separated from an oil barge and
sank in heavy seas off Cape Fear, North Carolina, early on
Wednesday, killing two crew members, tug and barge operator
Maritrans Operating Co. said.

Six were rescued and one was still missing from the crew of
the Valor, said Maritrans, a unit of Maritrans Inc.

The M 192 barge, carrying 135,000 barrels of #6 oil, or
residual fuel oil, is adrift, the company said, though it has
not been reported damaged. The barge was headed for Corpus
Christi, Texas.

Maritrans said it has activated its oil spill emergency
plans and said it is coordinating its operations with the U.S.
Coast Guard.
