Commuter Train, Car Collide on Long Island
February 16, 2006
SYOSSET, N.Y. – A commuter train carrying about 800 passengers collided with a car, killing a person inside the vehicle, authorities said.
The train’s engineer was treated for smoke inhalation, but no one else aboard the train was injured in Wednesday’s crash, Nassau County police said.
The collision occurred just before 7 p.m. at Robbins Lane, said Long Island Rail Road spokesman Sam Zambuto. The eastbound train left Hunterspoint Avenue at 5:47 p.m. and had been due to arrive in Port Jefferson at 7:30 p.m.
Buses replaced train service in the area Wednesday night. Normal service was restored early Thursday, Zambuto said.
The accident is under investigation.
