WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The White House is unaware of any letter from Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad attempting to ease mounting tensions with Tehran, U.S. national security adviser Stephen Hadley said on Monday.
"The international community has been clear as to what Iran needs to do," Hadley said on NBC's "Today" show. "It needs to return to the suspension of its enrichment activities in order to open the door for a diplomatic resolution of that issue."
"I'm not aware of any such letter," Hadley said.
An Iranian government spokesman said Ahmadinejad sent an unprecedented letter to President George W. Bush on Monday. It was unclear whether its contents offered any practical solution to a stand-off over Tehran's nuclear program.
