Three suspended for roles in Chicago brawl
NEW YORK (Reuters) – Cubs catcher Michael Barrett was
suspended for 10 games on Friday and three others disciplined
for their roles in a bench-clearing brawl at last Saturday’s
interleague game against the White Sox.
White Sox outfielder Brian Anderson was suspended for five
games, Sox third base coach Joey Cora for two games and White
Sox catcher A.J. Pierzynski was fined an undisclosed amount,
Major League Baseball announced.
The fracas erupted in the second inning of the intra-city
game when Pierzynski bowled over Barrett at home plate while
scoring on a sacrifice fly. When the two players got to their
feet, Barrett punched Pierzysnki square in the face.
Players poured out of both dugouts and Anderson, who hit
the fly ball that scored Pierzynski, tussled with Cubs first
baseman John Mabry, who suffered a rib injury.
The game, which the hosting White Sox eventually won 7-0,
was delayed nearly 15 minutes and Barrett, Pierzynski, Anderson
and Mabry were ejected.
