Conservative wins Mexico presidential election
July 6, 2006
(Reuters) – Conservative candidate Felipe Calderon narrowly
won Mexico’s presidential election, final results showed on
Thursday.
Here are the official results for the top three candidates,
with returns checked from 100 percent of polling stations in
the fiercely contested recount from last Sunday’s election.
FELIPE CALDERON, PAN 35.88 pct
ANDRES MANUEL LOPEZ OBRADOR, PRD 35.31 pct
ROBERTO MADRAZO, PRI 22.27 pct
Calderon had trailed left-wing rival Andres Manuel Lopez
Obrador in early stages of the official count but overtook him
as the last votes trickled in on Thursday morning.
Lopez Obrador has, however, claimed irregularities and will
challenge the result in Mexico’s electoral tribunal.
