Economist Named India’s Prime Minister

NEW DELHI – Manmohan Singh, a 71-year-old technocrat who forged the opening of India’s socialist-style economy, was named India’s next prime minister by the president Wednesday, a day after Congress party leader Sonia Ghandi stunned the nation by turning down the post.
