FAIRHOPE, Ala. - Former NFL star Thurman Thomas was arrested and charged with marijuana possession, police said Monday.
Thomas, in town to play in a charity golf tournament, was arrested at a hotel early Saturday. He had one partially smoked marijuana cigarette in his possession, Fairhope police spokesman Cpl. Craig Sawyer said.
The former Buffalo Bills running back did not immediately return a call from The Associated Press on Monday. His wife, Patti, said in a telephone interview that Thomas was "caught up in an uncomfortable situation with a couple of his buddies. ... He's not claiming any responsibility for it."
Sawyer said two hotel guests told an officer they saw Thomas with drugs.
Thomas was charged with second-degree possession of marijuana, a misdemeanor indicating the drug is for personal use. He was booked and released in time to play golf Saturday morning.
Thomas ran for 12,074 yards in 13 seasons with the Bills and Dolphins. He played in four straight Super Bowls with Buffalo from 1991-94.
Thomas was picked for five Pro Bowls and was league MVP in 1991. He was a star at Oklahoma State before his pro career.
