UAL plane makes emergency landing due to smoke
BOSTON (Reuters) – A United Airlines plane flying from
Boston to Chicago with 64 people made an emergency landing
without incident on Sunday after the captain detected smoke in
the cockpit.
Passengers were whisked off the plane on inflated
evacuation slides after touching down at their destination,
O’Hare International Airport, at 7:23 a.m., a few minutes ahead
of schedule, said Megan McCarthy, a spokeswoman for the airline
operated by UAL Corp..
The captain had radioed in and declared an emergency for
smoke in the cockpit while the flight was somewhere between
Boston and Chicago, McCarthy said.
No fire was reported and further details on the incident
were not immediately available pending an investigation,
McCarthy said.
One of the flight’s 58 passengers sprained her ankle while
evacuating the plane. She was treated by paramedics at the
airport and released, McCarthy said.
In addition to the passengers, there were two pilots and
four flight attendants on board.
