June 9, 2004

SHANGHAI, China – A highway bridge in northeastern China’s Liaoning province collapsed on Thursday morning, sending vehicles plunging into a river, China’s official Xinhua News Agency reported.

The Tianzhuangtai Bridge collapsed suddenly at 7:02 a.m., Xinhua said quoting local sources.

Vehicles were seen falling from the bridge, but there was no immediate word on casualties, the report said.

The bridge spans the Liao River to connect the cities of Panjin and Yingkou, 300 miles northeast of the capital Beijing.
