Israeli Missiles Fired at House in Gaza

July 25, 2004

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip – Two missiles were fired from an Israeli helicopter at a house in Gaza City on Sunday, witnesses said.

The attack came several hours after Palestinian militants fired mortar shells at a Jewish settlement in the volatile seaside territory, wounding five children.

The Israeli military had no comment on the reported strike.

Witnesses said the target was the same house that was hit by an Israeli missile strike earlier in the day.

The witnesses said the house was empty during the second attack.

One bystander was slightly injured, the witnesses said.

In the earlier attack, Israeli helicopters fired two missiles at the house, located in a crowded residential district of Gaza City that has been the scene of heavy fighting between the Israelis and Palestinian militants.

It was not immediately clear who was using the targeted house.

The Israeli miliatary often deploys helicopter gunships for precision strikes against wanted Palestinians.

Last Thursday, a missile killed two members of the Islamic Jihad militant group driving in a car in Zeitoun, a crowded residential district of Gaza City.

The target was a man who the Israelis said was involved in the desecration of Israeli soldiers killed last May, following one of the biggest operations inside Gaza City in years.

At least three other helicopters attacks were staged in the Gaza Strip in the last week alone.

On Wednesday, helicopters targeted a weapons workshop in the town of Khan Younis, and last Monday two separate raids hit a house in the Shati refugee camp near Gaza City described as a safe house used by a militant leader.
