LOS ANGELES - Joseph Jackson, Michael Jackson's father, had surgery Friday to fix two bleeding ulcers in his stomach, his lawyer said.
Jackson went to the hospital several days ago with what he had believed was food poisoning, but doctors detected the ulcers, his attorney, Debra Opri, told The Associated Press.
"He's alert and awake and has a big smile on his face," Opri said.
Joseph Jackson is the father of Michael, Janet, Jermaine, LaToya, Tito, Jackie, Marlon, Randy and Maureen Jackson. The Indiana native brought his family to California after Michael Jackson and his brothers made a name for themselves in the late 1960s as the Jackson 5.
He hired Opri to be an "extra pair of eyes" for him during Michael Jackson's child molestation case.
Michael Jackson has pleaded not guilty to child molestation and conspiracy charges. His trial is scheduled for Jan. 31.
