Remember: Muscle Weighs More Than Fat

Posted on: Wednesday, 3 November 2004, 12:00 CST

If you have repeatedly tried and failed to lose weight, you might be like many who focus primarily on reaching a certain number on the scale. If you are exercising, particularly strength (resistance) training, remember that muscle weighs approximately three times more than body fat, so be sure to keep this in mind whenever you step on the scale.

Muscle uses calories that might otherwise be stored as body fat, so the more of it you have, the more calories you burn. In addition to helping you to become leaner, resistance training increases bone density, and the resulting muscle gain gives you greater strength and aids in supporting the joints.

Taking a simple, positive approach can make all the difference in the world when it comes to achieving success.

Instead of measuring your success by scale weight, measure your ability to exercise and consume healthy foods each day. Deciding to focus on ways that you can improve your health and quality of life will allow you to lose excess pounds and inches without needless stress or fad dieting. Remember, if you have preexisting medical conditions, food allergies or sensitivities, or have been inactive, consult your doctor before beginning an exercise program or adjusting your diet.
