The cost of treating diabetes is soaring in Britain, an indication of the severity of obesity in the United Kingdom, health officials said.
A report released this week by the Prescription Pricing Authority said spending on diabetes care reached $1.1 billion last year compared to $339.7 million in 1998.
The figures translate to $20.3 million per week, The Daily Mail said Saturday.
The number of Brits afflicted with Type 2 diabetes, which is linked to excess weight, is expected to double by 2010, the British newspaper said.
Doctors said the staggering treatment figures showed the importance of diabetes prevention.
