Children's Hospital Boston Brings Portable CT Scanning to Pediatric Patients

NeuroLogica Corporation, a neuroscience-based medical imaging company, today announced that its CereTom® is in use at Children's Hospital Boston allowing portable CT imaging of pediatric patients. The CereTom will be used in the ICU, and eventually in the OR and radiology departments to help facilitate rapid head, neck and even full body CT scans for neonates.
"The portability of the CereTom allows us to bring the imaging technology to the patient rather than the other way around," says Jeffrey Burns, MD, MPH, chief of Critical Care Medicine. "We no longer need to transport some of these patients to the larger hospital CT scanner, which is better for the patients and reduces the stress and anxiety for both patients and parents."
Doctors will now be able to scan the most critical patients in the Medical/Surgical Intensive Care Unit because the CereTom is brought right to the bedside of the child. Many children in the MSICU would otherwise not be able to have CT imaging performed because the severity of their illness prohibits them from being transported to the hospital's standard CT scanner several floors away. The CereTom allows physicians to produce necessary scans of the child or newborn with minimal movement, which is often critical for their health and survival.
"We are proud that our technology has been able to the raise the standard of care for children, allowing them to receive CT scans without leaving the Intensive Care Unit," says Diane Clifford, Director of Global Marketing for NeuroLogica Corp. "The CereTom's incredible level of applicability in multiple medical settings gives doctors at Children's Hospital Boston the flexibility needed to provide the best medical imaging available to care for critically ill newborns and children of all ages."
"We applaud Children's Hospital Boston for its continued commitment to state-of-the-art technology to enhance pediatric critical care medicine," stated Eric Bailey, CEO & President of NeuroLogica Corp.
The CereTom is a portable eight slice CT scanner that acquires 1.25MM slices per rotation. It is capable of performing NeCT, CT Perfusion, Xenon Perfusion and CT Angiography. The CereTom is 29 inches long, about five feet tall and four feet wide and weighs approximately 750 pounds, and is designed for use in the ER, OR, ICU, MICU, SICU, NICU, interventional suite or any medical clinic.
The CereTom is now installed at hospitals and medical centers across the US and Europe including The Massachusetts General Hospital and UCLA Medical Center. Children's Hospital Boston is its first installment in a pediatric hospital.
