Macedonian Health Minister Announces Anti-Scorcher Measures

Skopje: The state of emergency, which was declared Thursday [ 19 July] to alleviate the bitter aftermath of the heat wave that gripped Macedonia, foresees introduction of six-hour work day and excused absence of pregnant women.

Health Minister Imer Selmani held a press conference Thursday to announce the prevention measures, due to enter in effect on 20 July. These measures are mandatory for the state and public administration. As regards the civic sector and business community, the guidelines are classified as recommendations.

The employees who work in covered areas and business premises will work from 7 am. [0500 gmt] till 1 pm. Those who work in open area will work in two shifts – from 7 am till 11 am and from 6 p.m. till 8 pm.

In order to catch up with the delays incurred by reduced work time, the reduced hours will be made up for on Saturdays within this year.

Health minister also said the number of emergency health services rose mildly, adding that emergency units were strongly advised to be alert and ready to cope with eventualities.
