25 Individuals Profiled, Representing Many Public Health Disciplines; Book Provides Real-World Examples of Public Health's Impact on Daily Life
Recognizing the essential role of public health workers in maintaining the health and safety of the U.S. population, Pfizer Inc has published a new book to celebrate the achievements of those working in the field. The Faces of Public Health profiles 25 people from across the United States who are making tangible efforts to improve the health and safety of their communities. The book, which is being launched at the 2004 American Public Health Association annual meeting (November 7-10) in Washington, D.C., was conceived, produced and published by Pfizer's U.S. Public Health Group.
The 25 individuals profiled in the book were selected from among hundreds of nominations made by state health officials and public health experts representing the 50 states and U.S. territories. (A complete list of the 25 individuals and their home city/state appears at the end of this release.) In exploring their life stories, The Faces of Public Health focuses on people who represent many but by no means all layers of the system.
"An important message that lies at the heart of The Faces of Public Health is the interconnectedness of our public health system," explains Barbara A. DeBuono, MD, MPH, Senior Medical Director/Group Leader, U.S. Public Health/U.S. Medical, Pfizer Inc. "The infrastructure of the U.S. system comprises many layers and many committed professionals working in partnership to protect the population from disease and injury. Every layer and every individual touches our lives in different ways, many invisible to us."
The book portrays the daily work of people in the trenches, making a difference in their communities. These people work in state, city and county health departments and in other branches of government, as well as in clinics, hospitals and non-profit organizations. From emergency preparedness to farm safety awareness to pro bono mental health services, the book fully demonstrates the diversity of the field and offers a glimpse in to the myriad career opportunities available in public health.
Each person profiled in The Faces of Public Health gives personal advice to those who are considering careers in public health. Those profiled also were asked to project ten years into the future, predicting where public health might be or where they hope it will go. The Faces of Public Health aims to make visible the invaluable work public health professionals perform day in and day out, and to celebrate their contributions to our nation's well being.
"Although public health has a vital impact on every individual every day, the work of public health can be mysterious to the general public," said Hugh Tilson, MD, DrPH, Senior Advisor to the Dean, and Clinical Professor, School of Public Health, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. "This book celebrates the work of the public health community, and puts a face on the thousands of individuals who have committed their lives to the safety and health of our society."
The Faces of Public Health is available free of charge and can be ordered on http://www.pfizerpublichealth.com. The book will also be distributed on-site at the American Public Health Association meeting. The Faces of Public Health is the latest addition to Pfizer's ongoing commitment to providing high-quality books on health care careers, including Advancing Healthy Populations: The Pfizer Guide to Careers in Public Health. This book can also be ordered free of charge on the Pfizer Public Health website.
