The Sex Doctor: ISSUE OF THE WEEK: PREMENSTRUAL SYNDROME; MONTHLY BLUES

Posted on: Sunday, 7 November 2004, 09:00 CST

ONE in three women suffer the monthly problem of pre-menstrual syndrome (PMS). Over 100 symptoms are associated with the syndrome and the condition can get so bad it wrecks lives and relationships.

WHAT IS IT?

WOMEN with PMS suffer a range of problems in days leading up to their period but once menstruation starts the symptoms disappear. Common complaints include depression and irritability, breast tenderness, bloating and headaches. The exact cause isn't known but it is probably linked to the changing hormone levels in the body at this time. Women can get PMS at any time in their life but often it's worse during puberty, nearing menopause and after childbirth.

SELF HELP

KEEPING a diary of symptoms and period dates can help identify problems due to the condition. Knowing that you'll feel better in a few days can be reassuring. The temptation is to eat chocolate and junk food but you're better off sticking to a low-fat diet and keeping caffeine to a minimum. Regular gentle exercise can really help your symptoms. It combats lethargy, reduces bloating and makes you feel better about yourself. Relaxation techniques can help with irritability. Various vitamins have been reported to be of help. These include Vitamins B6 and E, gamma-linoleic acid, calcium and magnesium. Evening primrose oil can be good for breast pain and Agnus Castus or chastberry extract can improve mood swings.

MEDICAL HELP

THE contraceptive pill regulates the sex hormones in a woman's body, avoiding the natural fluctuations around the time of the period. If you experience the discomfort of bloating, mild water tablets or diuretics may help. For more information see www.pms.org.uk
