A New Zealand study into the effect of the Atkins diet on diabetes suggests the illness improves in those diabetes who follow the diet.

The study, performed by Wellington Hospital, was the first scientific research performed into the effect of the popular protein and fat-rich diet on type-2 diabetes, a potentially deadly disease, the New Zealand Herald reported Sunday.

Diabetics are usually recommended a traditional low-fat diet to control their illness, but the Wellington study may change diabetic diets the world over.

The hospital said those in their focus group experienced reduced blood pressure, raised good cholesterol, lowered bad cholesterol, and vastly improved energy.
