The Pennsylvania National Guard and regional emergency responders will be holding a large-scale exercise on Friday at the Lancaster County Public Safety Training Center, beginning at 7:30 a.m.

The simulated mass-casualty exercise being coordinated by the Guard is named “Operation Red Rose II.” The exercise will test the response to a large-scale disaster. More than 500 military personnel are expected to participate.

Residents in the area of the center, at 101 Champ Boulevard in East Hempfield Township, may see smoke or hear explosions from the limited use of pyrotechnics used during the training.

The exercise – the second annual simulated mass casualty drill to be held with the Guard at the center – is expected to conclude by mid-afternoon.
