Hospital Operations Manager Appointed

Posted on: Tuesday, 9 November 2004, 15:00 CST

Steve Boyd has been named the new operations manager for Timaru Hospital and Community Services and South Canterbury District Health Board's mental health services.

Mr Boyd has managed the board's mental health service since June 2000. His new role incorporates that just vacated by former director of clinical services Kim Carter.

SCDHB chief executive Craig Climo said the new role combined for the first time senior management responsibility for the majority of the board's secondary health services.

"During the past four-and-a-half-years, Steve and his mental health team have built a service that is second to none.

"His strong management skills are complemented by keen concern for good patient outcomes and excellent service delivery, and I believe the hospital will benefit greatly from that combination," Mr Climo said.

He said Mr Boyd was a registered psychiatric nurse with extensive management experience. His background includes nearly 15 years in a variety of psychiatric nursing roles at Sunnyside Hospital in Christchurch.

Mr Boyd also spent nearly seven years in management and clinical roles with Canterbury DHB's mental health division in Ashburton, prior to joining SCDHB's mental health team in Timaru.

Mr Climo said his tenure with the Timaru Mental Health Service has seen the implementation of the Strengths Recovery Model and Knowing the People Planning concepts.

"After visiting the service last year, Mental Health Commission chairperson Jan Dowland wrote that mental health services in South Canterbury are leading the way and are some of the best that the commission has visited," he said.
