The 340B Prime Vendor Program, managed by Provista, LLC (formerly known as Healthcare Purchasing Partners, International, LLC), announced today that the cholesterol-lowering statin Crestor(R) (rosuvastatin calcium) is now available to participants.
Effective August 1, 2007, AstraZeneca will provide Crestor(R) to 340B Prime Vendor Program participants. Across the dose range, Crestor has been shown to provide a 45 to 63 percent reduction in LDL cholesterol and up to a 14 percent increase in HDL cholesterol. "We are excited to work with AstraZeneca to improve access to affordable medications for the nation's safety-net providers in treating high cholesterol within their low-income and uninsured populations. The new contract will improve access to best market pricing for our participating hospitals and community health centers, regardless of their size," said Chris Hatwig, senior director of the 340B Prime Vendor Program.
"We are pleased that Crestor has been added to the 340B Prime Vendor Program to help more Americans effectively manage their elevated cholesterol levels," said Mike Tilton, vice president primary care cardiovascular, AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals LP, U.S. "Crestor has been shown to be an important treatment option for patients, especially those with two or more risk factors, who are unable to reach their LDL cholesterol goal with diet and exercise alone."
Provista is the Office of Pharmacy Affairs awarded contractor to serve as the PrimeVendor for the 340B Program. The Prime Vendor Program was established to negotiate deeper discounts than those already offered under Section 340B of the U.S. Public Health Service Act. The Prime Vendor's role is to secure sub-ceiling discounts on outpatient drug purchases and discounts on other pharmacy related products and services for participating public hospitals, community health centers, and other safety-net health care providers electing to join the program.
340B Prime Vendor Program
The Prime Vendor Program was established to increase the discounts already offered under Section 340B of the U.S. Public Health Service Act, providing low-cost drugs to clinics, hospitals and programs for low-income Americans. Over 12,000 providers across the country qualify to participate in the discount program at no cost, and more than 5,300 facilities are currently enrolled. The program is administered by Provista, a group purchasing organization based in Irving, Texas.
