Black-Tie Party, Music and Magic Mark Center's Opening
Posted on: Wednesday, 10 November 2004, 21:00 CST
The Greater Tacoma Convention & Trade Center began with an idea - not to build an $84 million convention and trade center but simply to remodel Tacoma's Bicentennial Pavilion.
Surviving politics, avoiding serious legal wrangles and blessed by favorable steel prices and good construction weather, the center was built on budget and ahead of schedule.
Officials broke ground with 19 decorative shovels in November 2002. The doors open this weekend with a two-day party.
Look for antique cars and ballroom dancing, barbershop harmonies and Dixieland swing, juggling, drumming, magic and more than just a few relieved officials who wielded those shovels two years ago.
And for those so inclined, there also will be a black-tie gala.
The party begins at 11 a.m. Saturday with the ceremonial cutting of a ribbon.
Where: Greater Tacoma Convention & Trade Center, 1551 Broadway.
Getting there: Parking will be free in center lots, and Light Rail - with a stop at the center - will be running its regular schedule throughout downtown and the Dome District.
Cost: Daytime events Saturday and Sunday are free. The Saturday night black-tie ball is $85 per person.
The ball: 6 p.m. reception, followed by a "special surprise" at 7:20, dinner at 7:30, and then a recognition ceremony and dancing. Tickets are available. Call Becky Laybourn at 253-225-1617.
Daytime events: The center will be open to the public on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m.
Events will be scattered in rooms large and small throughout the center, and will feature, among other attractions: cars from the LeMay Automobile Museum; a dragon boat display; jazz, Dixieland, choral and barbershop music; Native American drumming and dancing; ballroom dancing; jugging and magic performances; and, from 1 to 3 p.m. each day, guided tours of the art that has been installed at the center.
