CPCA Celebrates Achievement in Patient, Program Success at National Health Center Week 2007

In accordance with National Health Center Week, the California Primary Care Association (CPCA) celebrates its more than 700 member Community Clinics and Health Centers (CCHCs) for providing quality, cost-effective primary and preventative care to millions low income, uninsured, and underserved Californians. California's community clinics range from small vans and trailers located in parking lots to tiny offices behind schools and comprehensive medical hospital-like facilities providing a multitude of services. Community clinics employ some of the state's finest health care practitioners who not only provide health care services, but also give hope and inspiration to California's disenfranchised communities.
Each year, Community clinics in California serve as the medical home to over 3.4 million people and provide over 11 million patient visits -- numbers that continue to grow. They provide primary care and health education to populations who are otherwise forgotten, save the state millions of dollars by providing an alternative to costly, unnecessary emergency room visits, reduce community infant mortality rates by up to 40 percent, and use a cost-effective health care model that serves as the benchmark for lowering overall treatment costs by 33 percent per patient.
"Without local community clinics and health centers, those in California's low income communities would have no place to go to receive medical care or education about preventative care," said Carmela Castellano-Garcia, Esq., Chief Executive Officer for CPCA. "The hundreds of clinics across California are the lifeblood for affordable health care for all Californians. As California's leaders take this year to address the issue of the state's broken health care system, they should take this week to recognize and honor community clinics as a part of the current system that works and is thriving."
