Association of Addiction Professionals Honors Carol Colleran, Hanley Center, With Annual William F. ''Bill'' Callahan Award

The Association of Addiction Professionals (NAADAC) has named Carol Colleran, Hanley Center, the recipient of the annual William F. "Bill" Callahan Award. The national association will honor her on September 5, 2007 at its annual conference awards dinner at the Renaissance Nashville Hotel and Convention Center in Nashville, Tennessee. Colleran, a leading advocate for older adults and recovery, is Executive Vice President of National Affairs and Public Policy for Hanley Center, West Palm Beach.
Colleran was selected as the 2007 William F. "Bill" Callahan Award recipient as an individual who has given sustained and meritorious service at the national level to the profession of addiction counseling. She is a renowned pioneer of specialized treatment of older adults who suffer from the disease of alcohol and other chemical addictions. Carol is a published author on alcohol and medication problems in the elderly. She co-authored, with Debra Jay, the book, Aging and Addiction: Helping Older Adults Overcome Alcohol or Medication Dependence, which won the National Media Award in 2003.
Colleran has been actively involved in regional, national and international associations involved in policy, advocacy, research and education. She serves as a member of the Center for Substance Abuse Task Force for Treatment in Aging and Substance Abuse, which determines guidelines and treatment protocol for older adults. In 2005 the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) asked her to serve on an Expert Panel for a new "Older American Substance Abuse and Mental Health Assistance Center." Colleran initiated and helped develop Hanley Center's leading Center for Older Adult Recovery.
In December 2006, Colleran received The Peter Fairclough Memorial Recognition Award by CARP, Inc. in West Palm Beach. This prestigious award was for her contributions to the overall advancement, improvement and expansion of services for chemically dependent persons and families on local, state or national levels. Also in 2006 she was honored with Hanley Center's first "Hanley Heroes" Award. Ms. Colleran was awarded the individual Service Provider of the Year by the Florida Association of Aging Service Providers (FASP) during the annual Florida Conference on Aging in 2003.
