Help for Tri-Lakes Job Seekers Moves in: Workforce Center Opens New Office
By Jennifer Wilson, The Gazette, Colorado Springs, Colo.
Aug. 9–Help will soon be a little closer to home for northern El Paso County job seekers.
The Pikes Peak Workforce Center will open a satellite office Wednesday in Monument in the new Tri-Lakes Cares building, 235 Jefferson St.
Organizers say the office will save Tri-Lakes residents a long drive to the workforce center’s headquarters on Pikes Peak Avenue.
“That is a good 45-minute drive from here,” said Tri-Lakes Cares volunteer Jane Sicola, who will head the Monument satellite office. Even the affluent Tri-Lakes area, with its pricey homes stretching from Palmer Lake to Black Forest, includes residents looking for work, Sicola said.
The office will feature several computer stations, a copy machine, a fax machine and plenty of personal assistance for people filling out online job applications, using Internet job-bank sites and creating resumes with special software.
Some people need help just setting up an e-mail address, Sicola said. Anyone who lives in El Paso or Teller counties can stop by.
But as one workforce center office opens, two more have closed, public information officer Jeanne Cotter said.
The office at the Lorraine Community Center in Fountain closed last month because its grant money ended, Cotter said.
The Youth Work Zone office for ages 14 to 21 also closed last month, but its services have been moved to the Pikes Peak building, Cotter said.
The workforce center can afford the Monument office because it won’t cost anything — Tri-Lakes Cares isn’t charging rent, volunteers will staff it and all equipment has been donated, Cotter said.
The workforce center also operates an office in Cripple Creek, she said.
