Sell on: Just Between Friends Gets Ready for Huge Consignment Sale: A Special Birthday Bash
By Jason Ashley Wright, Tulsa World, Okla.
Aug. 12–Just Between Friends’ fall consignment sale event is coming to the Trade Center at Expo Square Aug. 19-26.
Billed as the region’s largest consignment sale, JBF offers families the opportunity to save on more than 100,000 items from 1,200-plus consignors selling both new and gently used children’s goods. JBF maintains high standards, so every piece of merchandise is closely inspected.
Featured items include children’s and maternity clothing, hats and shoes, layette items, baby equipment, baby and household furniture, nursery items, books, DVDs, videos, computer software, playground equipment, other maternity items and toys, toys, toys.
As always, JBF will be supporting Emergency Infant Services by collecting donations of diapers, formula, baby food, clothing and cash donations. JBF also donates a portion of its profits to EIS, and many consignors donate unsold items to the charity.
We owe this jewel of an event to business partners Daven Tackett and Shannon Wilburn, who started out by gathering a group of friends to sell their children’s items to each other. Today, it’s evolved into a successful sale that has become a popular Tulsa tradition.
Hours for the sale are 1-7 p.m. Aug. 19 and 26, and 9 a.m.-7 p.m. Aug. 20-25.
For more info, either call 477-2345 or visit www.jbfsale.com.
Pavilion at Utica Square is celebrating 20 stylish years with a special anniversary celebration from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
As a thank-you to customers, owner Julie Kelly and cohorts Lucy and the two Sharons, will host a store-wide sale of 20 percent off, with a portion of proceeds from the two-day event being donated to Resonance.
In addition to hourly drawings for great prizes, plus yummy birthday treats, shoppers can browse around the fab fall finds. Be sure to sniff the Niven Morgan candles and, of course, celebrity-craved Bella Il Fiore cosmetics — which, I’ll have you know, were created here in Tulsa by Julie’s daughter, Jennifer Maloy.
In case you didn’t know about Resonance, it’s a wonderful organization that provides services leading to self-sufficiency for women and families experiencing challenge, change or adversity in their lives.

Stylish goings on
Estee Lauder at Dillard’s Woodland Hills will host a national makeup artist event Aug. 22-23.
The cosmetics counter is taking appointments for a color consultation with John Rodriguez, a national makeup artist for Estee Lauder. From what I’ve read and been told, he has an “expert eye for beautiful color creation.”
After you’re given a rundown of your skin-care requirements, you’ll have some one-on-one time with John. And did I mention the Estee Lauder gift with $26.50 purchase?
Plus, be sure to check out Lauder’s new fragrance, Pleasures Delight, the counter’s first gourmand scent. Got some in the mail, smells like heaven.
Not to get sidetracked, but listen to — yes, I said listen, not read — what’s in this fragrance. Top notes are juicy pomegranate, fresh greens, dewy freesia and whipped strawberry meringue. Middle notes are soft petals of white peony and lily blended with fresh muguet and tender heliotrope. And base notes are sugared rose petals, tempting caramel, fluffy marshmallow and vanilla, plus a touch of patchouli to balance the creamy gourmand feeling. Hand me a spoon. Anyway, it’s $45 for 1.7 ounces, $65 for 3.4.
John is available 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Aug. 22, then 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Aug. 23. You can reserve your spot for $75, which is redeemable in Estee Lauder products — including the newly reformulated Idealist, as well as Re-Nutriv.
To make your appointment or for more info, call the Estee Lauder counter at 252-1890, ext. 5350.
‘Black is back’
That’s the theme for Ebony magazine’s September issue, which celebrates the influence of blacks in the fashion industry.
From the players to the clothes to those who’ve made history, Ebony has dedicated 50-plus pages to all that is beautiful in fashion. To start things off fashionably correct, Ebony gathered Tyra Banks, Iman, Kimora Lee Simmons and Alek Wek to grace the cover.
These four divas tell their own stories of how they evolved from mere models to moguls, recounting the reality of being a woman of color in the fashion industry.
The issue ($3.50) will be available on newsstands starting Monday.
Guy stuff
Philips Norelco and a line of business within Royal Philips Electronics have introduced their two new shavers: Arcitec and the Moisturizing Shaving System.
The Philips Norelco Arcitec features the world’s first 360-degree pivoting shaving head to conquer hard-to-shave hairs on the face and neck. The Moisturizing Shaving System combines Philips’ shaving technology with Nivea for Men skincare expertise for a more nourishing shave. Both mark the first major design transformation for the iconic brand since the introduction of its triple-head shaver in 1968.
Arcitec is for the man who wants a meticulous shave on the face and neck, and Moisturizing Shaving System is for someone who wants his shaver to help promote healthy skin.
Cool points about Arcitec:
–The world’s only shaver that allows 360-degree maneuverability to capture the most challenging hairs, even on the neck.
–Provides a faster, closer shave thanks to triple-track shaving heads with an integrated lift-and-cut system.
–Shaving heads maintain maximum skin contact even in curved areas, tracing the contours of the neck and chin.
–Features a revolutionary ultra-slim ergonomic design, which is comfortable to hold and effortless to use.
And here’s some info on the Moisturizing Shaving System:
–Remember the Cool Skin from Norelco? This is similar, but you don’t have to screw around with messy cartridges anymore, my source at Norelco said. It’s a new pump-and-fill technique.
–The integrated Nivea for Men lotion provides an extra comfortable shave that conditions your skin and creates a healthy look.
–Features compact design and active-track system with precision blades that automatically track the curves of the face.
Arcitec retails for $169.99-$249.99, while the Moisturizing Shaving System is $79.99-$149.99, both at mass-market stores like Walmart and Target nationwide.
Fab find of the week
I love “French & Saunders,” the BBC comedy-sketch show with Jennifer “Absolutely Fabulous” Saunders and Dawn “The Vicar of Dibley” French.
I own a couple of DVDs of that show, which includes a spoof of “The House of Eliott,” an award-winning BBC drama I’d never seen before. I’ve since corrected that, having scored a copy of the 34-episode drama set during Roaring ’20s London. Obviously, this ultimate costume drama is my fab find of the week.
From the creators of “Upstairs, Downstairs,” it’s an addictive TV series set in the era of flappers and suffragettes.
Louise Lombard (“CSI,”"Hidalgo”) and Stella Gonet (“Nicholas Nickleby”) star as Evangeline and Beatrice Eliott, sisters born into wealth and privilege who must support themselves after their profligate father dies and leaves them penniless.
Although they have no education or training, the sisters have a passion for fashion design. While suitors try to woo them, and scoundrels try to trip them up, they make independent, exciting lives for themselves in the cutthroat world of fashion design.
The 12-disc, 29-hour-plus set ($119.99) from Acorn Media comes out Tuesday, so check your favorite place to buy movies.
Pearls of wisdom
Here are some great tips about caring for your strand of pearls from Terry Shepherd at ThePearlOutlet.com:
Never store pearl necklaces by hanging them. The thread will stretch over time.
Don’t store your pearl jewelry in the same box as your other jewelry. Diamonds and other gemstones can scratch the pearls, too.
You should store pearls separately from your other jewelry in a velvet-lined jewelry box. If you live in a very dry climate, give your pearls a warm bath every few weeks, and lay them out to dry.
Don’t store pearls in a safety-deposit box because they can dry out and crack.
If your pearls do require cleaning, it’s best to use a very soft, non-abrasive soap, such as soft liquid hand soap. Once you have gently wiped them with water and soft soap, you should let them dry naturally by letting them sit on a cloth or paper towel.
Don’t wear your pearls when the string is wet.
Finally, NEVER use detergent, bleaches, baking soda or ammonia-based products. And don’t use scouring pads or abrasive materials to clean your pearls.
