ChoicePoint(R) Helps Jewish Hospital & St. Mary's Healthcare Enhance Emergency Response Capabilities

Posted on: Monday, 13 August 2007, 09:16 CDT

LOUISVILLE, Ky., Aug. 13 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- ChoicePoint , through its iMapData(R) service, was a key participant in Operation Rapid Response, an internal preparedness exercise hosted recently by Jewish Hospital & St. Mary's HealthCare in Louisville to test its ability to respond to a community-wide crisis using day-to-day facility management capabilities. The exercise demonstrated synergies in advanced technologies that enable organizations to respond effectively during a major disaster.

For realism, the exercise simulated two events that previously occurred in the Jewish Hospital & St. Mary's HealthCare service area: an F4 tornado and a train derailment. As in real life, these mock events resulted in numerous "fires" and a "toxic chemical release." Exercise participants had to "respond to" damage to the hospital from hail and large debris, power and telephone outages, and an influx of patients with various medical emergencies.

ChoicePoint's iMapData afforded participants real-time situational awareness throughout the exercise. Hospital staff could access a wealth of data from iMapData's extensive library: contact information and staffing levels for area businesses, emergency contacts and capacity levels for area hospitals, local transportation routes, energy infrastructure, demographics and more.

"Participants could then use this data to create information-rich maps and reports to gain operational insights, such as the number of potential victims, and inform decision making," said Larry DeFranco, vice president and general manager of ChoicePoint's iMapData. "In real life, users can share these maps and reports internally or with federal, state and local responders to enhance communication and coordination."

iMapData is one component of a unique Web-based solution used by Jewish Hospital & St. Mary's HealthCare (http://www.jhsmh.org/) that seamlessly integrates multiple advanced technologies. The solution also includes FacilityOne(R) (http://www.facilityone.com/), the industry's first web-based facility management technology, and Niagara Framework(R) (http://www.tridium.com/), an application development platform that addresses the challenges associated with managing smart devices. Users manage all three systems from one interface.

With this integrated solution, users can access timely weather-related and infrastructure data, as well as monitor and control systems at multiple facilities in real-time, without searching for blueprints or being tied to a location-based computer. The result is enhanced operational awareness and improved response capabilities.

"I commend Jewish Hospital & St. Mary's HealthCare for their efforts to proactively enhance their emergency response capabilities to better serve the Louisville community," said DeFranco. "We are honored that they selected iMapData to help them more effectively and efficiently provide critical emergency services."
