Pain certification
BLOOMINGTON – Karen Pachis, a registered nurse and nursing supervisor at OSF St. Joseph Medical Center, has earned certification in pain management from the American Nurses Credentialing Center.
The certification requires 30 hours of continuing education units within the past three years, with 15 hours specifically in pain management.
Pachis believes the certification will help her to provide support to patients and families and to teach them strategies to deal with pain. Pachis has worked at St. Joseph for more than 20 years and has a master’s degree in community health nursing from Indiana University in Bloomington, Ind.
Dentistry fellowship
BLOOMINGTON – Dr. Gerald Awadzi, of Hershey Plaza Dental Center, 507 N. Hershey Drive, Bloomington, has received the Academy of General Dentistry Fellowship Award.
The Fellowship Award honors general dentists who ensure delivery of quality oral health care to patients and who remain current within the dental profession. To quality for the award, Awadzi completed more than 500 continuing dental education credit hours, passed a comprehensive exam and has been a member of the academy for more than three years.
Nurse certified
PEORIA – Jane Anderson, a registered nurse from Metamora, is among four nurses from Methodist Medical Center in Peoria who have received certification as ambulatory perianesthesia nurses by the American Board of Perianesthesia Nursing Certification.
Anderson works in Methodist’s Surgical Services Department.
To achieve certification, registered nurses must have a minimum of 1,800 hours of perianesthesia nursing experience and must successfully complete a three-hour examination.
Nurse Exemplars
URBANA – Chris Dippel of Buckley, Cara Lucht of Cissna Park and Mary Beth Voights of rural Streator are among 17 nurses from Carle Foundation Hospital who have been named 2007 Nurse Exemplars.
Nurse Exemplars are honored by their peers for providing outstanding service.
Dippel works in the neonatal intensive care unit and is a graduate of Mennonite College of Nursing, Bloomington. Lucht works in oncology and is a graduate of Parkland College. Voights works in trauma services and patient care administration and is a graduate of Methodist Medical Center School of Nursing, Bradley University, and the University of Illinois at Chicago.
APPOINTMENTS
New pulmonologist
NORMAL – Dr. Anthony Zachria, of Houston and formerly of Morton, has joined Illinois Heart & Lung Associates in Normal and Pontiac.
A specialist in pulmonary, critical care and sleep medicine, he recently completed a Fellowship program at the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston, where he also performed his internship and residency in internal medicine. He received his doctor of osteopathic medicine degree at the University of North Texas Health Science Center-TCOM in Fort Worth.
Zachria has experience in medical, cardiovascular and surgical intensive care consult, as well as sleep medicine, pulmonary rehabilitation, and long-term acute care. He is board certified in internal medicine and pulmonary diseases and board eligible in critical care medicine and sleep medicine. He has been published in his field and has received several awards and honors, including the CHEST Foundation’s Young Investigator Award.
OSF doctors
BLOOMINGTON – Dr. Catherine Lamb and Dr. Sanjay Pancholi are joining the internal medicine practice of OSF Medical Group, 302 St. Joseph Drive, Bloomington.
Lamb is a graduate of Southern Illinois University School of Medicine, Springfield, and she served her residency in internal medicine at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center, Peoria. She has had teaching positions at the University of Illinois College of Medicine, Peoria; Millikin University, Decatur; Purdue University, West Lafayette, Ind,; Augustana College, Rock Island; Illinois State University, Normal; Eureka College, Eureka; and Bradley University, Peoria.
Pancholi is a graduate of the University of Maryland at College Park, earned his osteopathic medical degree from Des Moines University Medical Center, and completed his residency in internal medicine at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center, Peoria. He served as lab manager at the University of Maryland, Baltimore, and as a research assistant at the Institute of Human Virology, Baltimore.
Dance for Cure
BLOOMINGTON – Sallie Boge has been named honorary chairwoman for the 2007 Dance for the Cure by the McLean County Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
Boge, of Bloomington, is a 10-year survivor of breast cancer and a long-time supporter of cancer awareness activities. Boge, sales manager of Jack Lewis Fine Jewelry, has been in the jewelry business for 50 years.
The third annual Dance for the Cure, which will be Oct. 19 at the DoubleTree Hotel & Conference Center, Bloomington, is a fundraiser for local breast health and breast cancer awareness projects. Last year, $20,000 was raised. The evening will include a dinner, silent auction, raffle and dancing. EUREKA – Dr. Mark Mroczko of Peoria has joined the medical staff of Town & Country Healthcare, Eureka.
Mroczko received his medical degree from Loyola University’s Stritch School of Medicine in Maywood and completed his residency at the University of Illinois College of Medicine, Peoria. He has training in advanced cardiac life support, advanced life support in obstetrics, pediatric advanced life support and neonatal resuscitation. He and his wife and children will be relocating to Goodfield.

URBANA – Bernadette Tiemann of Mahomet has been named director of The Caring Place in Urbana, a child care center owned by The Carle Foundation.
Tiemann, previously interim director of the facility, is a graduate of Emporia State University in Emporia, Kan.

LINCOLN – New technology at Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital is helping doctors, nurses and other health care professionals to more easily find veins and to avoid multiple needle sticks to patients.
The VeinViewer works on patients of any age, body type and skin tone, the hospital said. The viewer uses near-infrared light, a digital video camera and an image processing unit to build an image of a patient’s blood vessels and project an image onto the skin using visible green light.
The hospital’s foundation provided $25,000 for the unit, making Abraham Lincoln Memorial the second hospital in Illinois with the technology.
Roof sit results
MEADOWS – Connie Cook, activity director at Meadows Mennonite Retirement Community, raised nearly $11,000 in her second annual Campout for a Cure to benefit the Alzheimer’s Association’s Memory Walk. The walk will be Oct. 6 in Bloomington-Normal.
Cook stayed on the roof of Meadows Mennonite from 7 a.m. Aug. 2 until 9:30 a.m. Aug. 6 when she exceeded her goal of $10,000. Contributions came from residents throughout the area.
“At first, I was thrilled,” Cook said. “Then I broke down and cried.”
Cook, of Fairbury, is raising money in memory of her father, the late Michael Hines, who had Alzheimer’s disease, and to benefit families that deal with Alzheimer’s. She continues to accept donations for the association at P.O. Box 201, Fairbury IL 61739.

BLOOMINGTON – The Billy Brockmann Memorial Scholarship Golf Outing will be 8:30 a.m. Sept. 8 at Fairlakes Golf Course in Secor.
Brockmann, of Bloomington, was a St. Jude patient who died of a brain tumor in 1999 at age 10. Epsilon Sigma Alpha Sorority, Alpha Alpha Chapter, established the scholarship in his memory. The goal of the golf outing is to raise money for scholarships that are awarded yearly to Central Illinois students. A student from Hudson and a student from Clinton recently were awarded $5,000 scholarships.

STREATOR – Streator Onized Credit Union has donated $1,000 to the Friends of St. Mary’s Hospital. The money will be used in the hospital’s pediatric unit.
Trina Hamrick, a registered nurse and manager of medical/ surgical/pediatric services, said the money will go to the creation of welcome kits for young patients.
