New Report Analyzes Unmet Needs and Clinical Progress in Key Women's Health Markets

Posted on: Tuesday, 14 August 2007, 12:21 CDT

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz., Aug. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- MedPredict Market Research, a global provider of pharmaceutical competitive intelligence and market research, has published a new report revealing emerging trends in the rapidly growing and controversial market for Women's Health therapies.

According to this report, entitled MedPredict Thought Leader Insight & Analysis: Women's Health, physician experts in North America and Europe see vasomotor symptoms, female sexual dysfunction, and breast care prevention as the hottest topics in Women's Health pharmaceutical research today.

Vasomotor symptoms (hot flush, hot flash, night sweats) are extremely prevalent in perimenopausal and menopausal women, with report rates approaching 90%. This report explores the emerging standards of care for treating these symptoms, including both hormonal and non-hormonal pharmacotherapies.

Following the FDA's high profile 2004 rejection of P&G's Intrinsa for female sexual dysfunction (FSD) due to safety concerns, the pharmaceutical industry has been cautious about proceeding with clinical programs for testosterone-based therapies. MedPredict's expert panel weighs in on the risks and benefits of such therapies, as well as exploring new endpoints they think are relevant to FSD but are being overlooked by pharmaceutical developers.

While there are a number of SERMs (selective estrogen receptor modulators) either approved or in clinical development for the prevention of breast cancer, MedPredict's research shows leading physicians are ambivalent to negative in their interest in this class of drugs for this indication. "Breast cancer is coming to be considered as a curable disease for many women (metastatic breast cancer not withstanding), according to MedPredict President Jeffrey D. Berk, PhD. "SERMs are lumped in with aromatase inhibitors when our physician panel considers the possible long-term adverse effects vs. the real potential to increase survival and quality of life."

This report can be purchased by contacting MedPredict. Members of the media may request an interview.
