Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center Goes Live With Siemens Soarian Health Information Solution

Siemens Medical Solutions (www.usa.siemens.com/healthcareit) and Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center of East Patchogue, N.Y., announce that the 321-bed community hospital is live on Soarian®, Siemens' next-generation, workflow-engineered healthcare information system that supports patient-centered care. Brookhaven Memorial Hospital is the first facility in the New York City area to go live with the Soarian Clinical suite of solutions, which will enable the Medical Center to re-engineer processes throughout its organization, helping to drive efficiencies, address patient safety initiatives and enhance clinical decision-making.

Brookhaven Memorial Hospital's use of Soarian allows the medical staff to access an electronic patient record, including images and test results, from any workstationi within the hospital, or a home or office computeri. Soarian also enables staff members to better coordinate patient care through the comprehensive order processing and work lists.

Just last year, as a part of its ongoing patient safety initiative programs, Brookhaven Memorial Hospital began using Siemens Med Administration Check™, an application that utilizes point-of-care barcode technology to validate and document the medication administration process, which seamlessly interfaces with Brookhaven Memorial Hospital's currently installed Siemens Pharmacy, an application that automates the medication distribution at the Pharmacy Department. These implementations, plus the anticipated addition of the Soarian Computerized Physician Order Entry (CPOE) functionality, will help the Medical Center achieve a closed-loop medication administration process -- from the physician's initial order to administration of the medication to the patient. The use of these solutions supports online notifications to signal clinicians to potential medication conflicts, allergies, drug-to-drug interactions, duplicate order checking and other patient safety considerations. As a result, clinicians at Brookhaven Memorial Hospital will spend less time tracking down data from multiple sources, as is typically associated with the traditional paper medical record, and more time with their patients.
