Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center Goes Live With Siemens Soarian Health Information Solution

Siemens Medical Solutions (www.usa.siemens.com/healthcareit) and Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center of East Patchogue, N.Y., announce that the 321-bed community hospital is live on Soarian®, Siemens' next-generation, workflow-engineered healthcare information system that supports patient-centered care. Brookhaven Memorial Hospital is the first facility in the New York City area to go live with the Soarian Clinical suite of solutions, which will enable the Medical Center to re-engineer processes throughout its organization, helping to drive efficiencies, address patient safety initiatives and enhance clinical decision-making.
Brookhaven Memorial Hospital's use of Soarian allows the medical staff to access an electronic patient record, including images and test results, from any workstationi within the hospital, or a home or office computeri. Soarian also enables staff members to better coordinate patient care through the comprehensive order processing and work lists.
"This is a major strategic IT move for Brookhaven Memorial Hospital in beginning our journey toward an electronic health record and redesigning our healthcare workflows to make them more efficient and patient-centric," said Donald Fleming, vice president and chief information officer, Brookhaven Memorial Hospital. "Because Soarian is easy to use and pushes information when and where it's needed most, we anticipate that, over time, this technology will help our physicians and nurses in making more informed clinical decisions and will free up even more time that can be spent at the bedside."
Soarian combines clinical, financial and operational processes to support patient-centered care. By streamlining access to images and data from a variety of medical modalities in one location, Soarian helps facilitate more informed decision-making -- leading to improved care delivery, increased staff satisfaction, and more efficient business practices.
"We have been closely aligned with Brookhaven Memorial Hospital's healthcare IT strategy and execution for nearly three decades now, and it is gratifying to see the Medical Center further advance its IT infrastructure," said Janet Dillione, president, Health Services, the Healthcare IT Division of Siemens Medical Solutions. "Brookhaven Memorial Hospital's commitment to the use of IT to increase efficiency and improve the level of patient care is clearly evident and will continue to help the Medical Center differentiate itself in the New York City area."
"Our medical staff has embraced the Soarian technology and is eager to realize its potential, further demonstrating Brookhaven Memorial Hospital as a state-of-the-art medical facility," said Tom Ockers, president and chief executive officer, Brookhaven Memorial Hospital. "Our long-standing relationship with Siemens helped us prioritize technology needs, based on our over-arching, organizational goals, such as advancing quality and patient safety initiatives."
Just last year, as a part of its ongoing patient safety initiative programs, Brookhaven Memorial Hospital began using Siemens Med Administration Check™, an application that utilizes point-of-care barcode technology to validate and document the medication administration process, which seamlessly interfaces with Brookhaven Memorial Hospital's currently installed Siemens Pharmacy, an application that automates the medication distribution at the Pharmacy Department. These implementations, plus the anticipated addition of the Soarian Computerized Physician Order Entry (CPOE) functionality, will help the Medical Center achieve a closed-loop medication administration process -- from the physician's initial order to administration of the medication to the patient. The use of these solutions supports online notifications to signal clinicians to potential medication conflicts, allergies, drug-to-drug interactions, duplicate order checking and other patient safety considerations. As a result, clinicians at Brookhaven Memorial Hospital will spend less time tracking down data from multiple sources, as is typically associated with the traditional paper medical record, and more time with their patients.
