MIAMI, Aug. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- CyberKnife Center of Miami and Palm Beach's Executive Director, Dr. James G. Schwade, of Miami, has been selected as an ASTRO Fellow for 2007. This distinguished honor is bestowed upon physicians in Florida recognized for their leadership and significant service to American Society of Therapeutic Radiation Oncology, in the field of radiation oncology. These distinguished men and women will receive their Fellow of ASTRO designation on October 30th at the award ceremony during the Society's 49th Annual Meeting in Los Angeles.
"It is an honor to be among the three Fellows appointed in Florida, and an achievement for any physician in the field," said James G. Schwade, M.D.
Eligibility to receive the Fellow in ASTRO designation is based upon length of membership and meritorious service to ASTRO and to the field of radiation oncology. Four possible pathways to becoming a Fellow- leadership/service, research, patient care and education - are considered. At the outset of the program, the required length of active membership in ASTRO is 20 years.
As the Director of the Cyberknife Center of Miami, which began operations in late 2003, Dr. Schwade initiated the first Cyberknife location in the Southeastern US, and is certified and trained to utilize the Cyberknife. He also serves as the Director of the Cyberknife Center of Palm Beach, which he opened in late 2005, and as CEO of Morse LLC, parent organization of those clinical facilities.
He has received gubernatorial appointments to the Florida HRS Advisory Council on Radiation Protection (1985-99), and to the Florida Cancer Control and Research Advisory Board (2005-present), the major advisory panel to the Governor and Legislature of Florida regarding cancer related issues. Dr. Schwade has authored over 80 scientific articles, and lectured extensively in this country and abroad.
In May of 2005, Schwade was awarded the Golden Stethoscope Award by Florida Medical Business as the Physician Entrepreneur of the Year.
He is a member of numerous state and national professional societies, a Fellow of the American College of Radiology and a Fellow of the American College of Radiation Oncology.
