Quality Associates Wins Two Digital Archiving Contracts With the National Institutes of Health

Quality Associates, Inc., an established provider of services and solutions for document management, imaging and archiving, announced it was awarded two large-scale conversion contracts with the Bethesda, Maryland-based National Institutes of Health (NIH), the component of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services that is the primary federal agency for conducting and supporting medical research and investigating the causes, treatments and cures for both common and rare diseases.
Quality Associates is converting nearly two million pages of printed grant applications into searchable electronic PDF files. When the work is completed this fall, authorized NIH staff members will be able to electronically search and access nearly 35,000 paper-based grant applications. The project is valued at approximately $500,000.
Quality Associates is performing the work on behalf of two NIH research institutes: The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) and the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID). Both Institutes receive thousands of grant applications each year. While the majority of new applications are submitted online via the www.egrants.gov website, thousands of older, or "legacy," grants are only available in printed form and must be converted into a digital format before they can be added to NIH's intranet.
The NIDDK conducts and supports research in diabetes and other endocrine and metabolic diseases; digestive diseases, nutrition, and obesity; and kidney, urologic and hematologic diseases. The NIAID conducts and supports basic and applied research to better understand, treat, and ultimately prevent infectious, immunologic, and allergic diseases.
Quality Associates has a long history in working with NIH. Earlier this year, the company announced new work with NIH's Information Technology Acquisition and Assessment Center (NITAAC) to design and implement a document management and archiving system to hold more than a half-million pages of government-wide acquisition contracts (GWACs). Last year, the company announced that it was performing video archiving services on behalf of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD).
Scott Swidersky, Director, Information Systems Division, Quality Associates, said, "Every government agency grapples with the challenges of organizing massive amounts of paperwork, handling large quantities of incoming documentation, and converting their existing legacy materials into more usable digital formats. We are extremely pleased to be applying our skills and experience in document management to help two highly respected Institutes more readily access and retrieve relevant and important information."
Founded in 1986, Quality Associates is a GSA Federal Supply Service (FSS) contractor that has developed a strong track record in providing data conversion and archival services and systems for local, state and federal governments.
