Over Half of U.S. Diabetic Adults Obese

Posted on: Friday, 19 November 2004, 12:00 CST

More than half of U.S. adults with diabetes are obese, which may increase their risk of death due to complications from the disease, health officials said.

The finding, which comes from a national survey of adults with diabetes who are 20 years or older, is of concern because obesity complicates control of diabetes and may increase the risk for heart disease, officials from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported in the agency's journal Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.

Researchers led by M.S. Eberhardt, of the National Center for Health Statistics, also noted obesity is associated with poorer control of blood sugar levels, blood pressure and cholesterol in people with diabetes.

In addition, the percentage of obese U.S. adults increased from 23 percent in the early 1990s to more than 30 percent during 1999 to 2002.

The CDC officials noted losing weight has been shown to reduce mortality among overweight people who have diabetes.

They advise, Encouraging patients to achieve and maintain a healthy weight should be a priority for all diabetes-care programs.
