Patients large and small: Role of the pharmacist in veterinary medicine.

Wick JY, Zanni GR. J Am Pharm Assoc (Wash DC) 2004; 44(3): 319- 323.

Ms. Wick is a senior clinical research pharmacist affiliated with the National Cancer Institute, U.S. National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, Maryland, and Dr. Zanni is a health systems consultant based in Alexandria, Virginia. The authors provide a brief overview of the history of veterinary medicine, veterinary drug approvals, species-specific pharmacokinetics, medicating companion animals, alternative treatments, veterinary prescriptions, counseling animal owners, adverse effect monitoring, poisonings, animal euthanasia and bereavement counseling. Because the authors realize that some pharmacists do not come in contact with many veterinary prescriptions or receive requests for counseling on over-the- counter products that may be used for animal health, they provide a table that lists four veterinary resources for pharmacists.
