Posted on: Friday, 7 September 2007, 12:01 CDT

CLEVELAND, Sept. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Three local nonprofit alcohol and drug treatment agencies have formed a collaborative to focus on the problems faced by the children of alcoholics and other drug addicts. Recovery Resources, Stella Maris and Community Challenge have banded together to produce a public awareness campaign, provide training for counselors and stage educational community forums. The initiative is being funded through a $145,000 grant from the St. Luke's Foundation of Cleveland.

"The Children of Alcoholics Outreach Program will be the first major effort in Greater Cleveland to raise awareness of the problems faced by the children of alcoholics and other drug addicts and to help them," stated Recovery Resources president and chief executive officer Helen K. Jones. "Our collaboration with Stella Maris and Community Challenge and the generosity of the St. Luke's Foundation will make it possible for us to inform the public, train the professionals and help those who seek assistance."

Recovery Resources will lead the public awareness campaign and manage the overall initiative; Stella Maris will provide clinical training to certified counselors and other licensed professionals; and Community Challenge will conduct community forums. Cleveland-based Adcom Communications has been selected to help develop and produce the public awareness campaign that will target the children of alcoholics as well as their families, friends and others who are concerned for them.

The first community forum will be held on Tuesday, September 11, 2007 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Lutheran Hospital Castele Learning Center, 1730 West 25 Street, Cleveland, Ohio 44113. Dr. Robert L. Smith, Ph.D. will conduct a workshop on "Help and Hope for Children of Alcoholics." The workshop is free and open to the public.

The grant for the Children of Alcoholics Outreach Program is one of ten grants totaling $1.4 million awarded by the St. Luke's Foundation of Cleveland to mark their ten year anniversary. All of the grants support programs that align with the Foundation's mission of improving and transforming the health and well being of individuals, families and communities throughout Greater Cleveland.

Recovery Resources Inc., established in 1954, helps people to triumph over mental illness, alcoholism, drug- and other addictions. With more than 125 employees and an annual operating revenue of $8.2 million, Recovery Resources ranks among the largest nonprofit corporations in Greater Cleveland and largest independent behavioral health providers in Ohio.
