Local Libraries Submit Upcoming Schedule of Events
Below is a list of upcoming activities at the Main Library in Charleston and at Glasgow, Marmet and Riverside libraries. All programs are free unless otherwise noted.

Labor Day Hours
All libraries in the KCPL system will be closed on Sept. 3 for Labor Day.
Family Read Aloud Club
Oct. 15-March 31
KCPL’s Family Read Aloud Club is a program inviting parents to read aloud to their children during the school year. The aim of the program is twofold: for families to spend quality time together and to promote lifelong literacy.
Registering for the program is as simple as A, B, C! Visit your local library to enroll. You will receive a game sheet and program guidelines.
Your family will have until March 31 to read up to 18 books.
Rewards of the program, in addition to those mentioned above, include receiving as many as three free books and participating in a special library after hours celebration at the Dunbar Branch Library on April 18.

Car Seat Safety Check
Is your child buckled up correctly? According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, seven out of 10 kids in child car safety seats are not buckled in correctly.
After selected storytime programs, the Charleston Police Department’s certified car seat inspector will check that your child’s car seat is properly installed in your car. Join us for fun, and stick around for safety!

Can You Repeat That, Please?
Have you ever left the doctor’s office feeling as if you did not understand anything you had been told? This program is designed to help you and your physician to better understand each other.
During the one-hour program, the following issues and solutions to each issue will be discussed: problems with patient-doctor communication, expectations for your visit, methods for improving your next appointment.
Participants will receive a copy of the Personal Health Journal.
The presenter is Bonnie Dunn-Parsons, Extension Agent at the West Virginia University Extension office.

Walk for the Art of It 2

Beginning a healthy life starts when individuals and families increase their participation in activities that promote a healthy lifestyle. What better way to encourage this than to invite individuals and families to take a walk around the State Capitol grounds to see various works of art.
Stop by your library for your map to these sites. This map will also help you track the steps to a happier, healthier you.

Early Literacy Workshops
By appointment
Do you work with children ages birth-5 years and their parents and caregivers? Consider contacting an Early Literacy trainer to arrange an Early Literacy workshop at your location. These workshops are free and are ideal for parents and caregivers or for those working in early childcare settings.
In the Early Literacy workshops, participants discuss the importance of developing pre-reading skills in children long before they start school, the six skills that researchers have identified as being crucial for children to develop before they start learning to read in school and demonstrate age-appropriate techniques and activities that can be used by parents, caregivers and early child- care professionals to help children develop these skills.

Workshops will be scheduled based upon the availability of trainers and the number of requests for workshops that are received.

Make It and Take It: Mason Jar Dessert Mix
Wednesday, Sept. 12, noon, John V. Ray Room (patrons may bring their lunch)
Create your own Mason jar layered with ingredients for a sweet dessert. KCPL staff member and crafter Lynn Barney will provide the jars, recipes and all the ingredients. She will also provide materials to jazz up your jar.

Femmes Fatales Revisited: Classic Pulp Fiction by Women Writers Reading and Discussion Group
Thursday, Sept. 13, 5:30 to 7 p.m.
Karen Anderson, English instructor at West Virginia State University, will lead a discussion about Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s “Unpunished.”
Written in the late 1920s, this detective novel weaves a case for women’s freedom and empowerment into a mystery rich in colorful characters, red herrings, suspense and wry humor.
Registration is not required, but copies of the book are limited. They may be picked up at the Reference Desk.

Revisit Life on the Home Front with Molly: An American Girl

Molly McIntire, the main character of one of the “American Girl” series, lives in the suburbs during 1944 while her father is stationed in Europe. Learn about life for families during World War II through crafts and games.

MySpace, Social Networking Sites, and Internet Safety

Ever stop to think about who is looking at your or your children’s MySpace page? Are you being as safe as you can be with your personal information online? Ever wonder if use of social networking sites can come back to hurt you in the work place, college, or beyond?
If you answered yes to any of these questions, then you’ll want to attend this panel discussion of how personal information on the Internet affects individuals.

Like a Fish Out of Water…Brown Bag Book Discussion
Tuesday, Sept. 18, noon
KCPL begins a new, short-term book group with this discussion of “In a Sunburned Country” by Bill Bryson.
The “Like a Fish Out of Water” book group will discuss four hilarious, culture-shock memoirs – from Australia to India to the Equatorial Pacific, and, finally, to Southern California.
The group meets the third Tuesday of each month at noon from September through December in the John V. Ray Room. Discussion leader is Kanawha County Public Library staff member Susan Maguire, collection specialist librarian.

Computer and Windows Basics

In this class, participants will explore the basic parts of their computers, focusing on computer vocabulary and technical terms and performing some basic functions with the mouse and keyboard, so you’ll be ready to start creating documents and exploring programs in no time.
This program is recommended for those who just bought their first computer or who need/want a refresher on the basics listed above. No previous computer knowledge or skills are required.

General Moses: Stories from the Life of Harriet Tubman
Saturday, Sept. 22, 2 p.m.
Ilene Evans portrays this History Alive! character in an hour- long program designed for elementary-age students through adults.
The library becomes a station on the Underground Railroad, as audience members travel back in time to 1855 to learn how a lady known as Moses led hundreds of slaves to freedom.
Harriet Tubman was never caught and never lost a slave on the route to freedom.
CDs will be available for sale at this performance.

A mouth has been invaded by two mouth goblins! Junk food and bad health habits make them stronger and more destructive to the body.
Through creative interpretations of “The Three Little Pigs” and “Hansel and Gretel,” the mouth learns healthful habits and how to wipe out these teeth-rotting villains.

Free early literacy workshops will be offered at the Riverside Public Library for those seeking credentialing on the WV STARS career pathway.
Each workshop counts for two clock hours in Core Knowledge Content Area 4: Curriculum. Be sure to bring your WV STARS ID number to receive credit.

Children learn important pre-reading skills long before they start school. As a parent, caregiver or child-care provider, you can help you children develop these skills from birth to 5 years.
In each of these workshops, participants will discuss the six skills that researchers have identified as being crucial for children to develop before they start school and demonstrate age- appropriate techniques and activities that you can use to help your children develop these skills.
Lastly, participants will discuss all of the resources that are available at the public library to help you build these skills in your children.

ATV Safety Awareness Course
Tuesday, Sept. 25, 6 p.m.
Since 2000, ATV crashes have killed an average of 23 people per year in West Virginia, many of them children. Are you aware that no person under the age of 18 may operate an ATV without a certificate of completion of a vehicle rider safety awareness course as offered or approved by the Commissioner of Motor Vehicles?
Representatives from the West Virginia Division of Motor Vehicles will be presenting 30-minute ATV safety awareness classes at several area libraries. Parents need to be present with their children for the class. Parents also need to bring the child’s birth certificate and Social Security number to the class so that a certificate of completion can be issued to the child.
