Troupe Will Hold Nutcracker Auditions Next Weekend

Baton Rouge Ballet Theatre will hold auditions for its annual Christmas production, The Nutcracker, A Tale from the Bayou, Saturday and Sunday, Sept 22 and 23, at the Dancers Workshop, 10745 Linkwood Court.
Auditions are open to both advanced dancers and children between the ages 8 and 13.
More than 300 children will be chosen to fill the roles of lambs, mice, cooks, soldiers, angels, bon bons and party children.
Audition times are as follows: 10:30 a.m. Saturday, advanced dancers; 12:45 p.m. Sunday, boys 8 and up; 1:15 p.m. Sunday, 8-year- old girls; 2:15 p.m., 9-year-old girls; 3:15 p.m., girls 10-11 years old; and 4:15 p.m., girls 12-14 years old.
There will be a $5 audition fee.

Short films at Manship
The Short Films of Roger Beebe: Documents, Experiments and Wisecracks will be screened at the Manship Theattre, 100 Lafayette St., at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 19.
The event is part of the Southern Circuit Tour of Independent Filmmakers.
Beebe is a member of the film faculty at the University of Florida.
A Meet the Filmmaker reception will follow the screening.

Hot 8 at Manship
New Orleans’ own Hot 8 Brass Band will play at the Manship Theatre, 100 Lafayette St., at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 18.
The band, which has toured worldwide, plays the traditional Second Line parades and has been a symbol of New Orleans street music for more than a decade.

Movie at UpStage
UpStage Theatre Company, 1713 Wooddale Blvd., will premiere an original sketch comedy movie, Laugh Now, Laugh Later, at 8:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 21.
The movie presents a funny look at politics, family, relationships and employment situations.
The cast includes Southern University alumni Katorri Alexander, Shana Allen and Darren Radcliff. Other students featured are Bashirah Perine, Bobby Matthews and Carlos Rodriguez.
The movie was written by Terrance Turner and Alexander Scott, and was directed by Thomas F. Davis.
The movie runs through Nov. 1.

Arts in Livingston
The public is invited to a planning meeting concerning the growth of the arts in Livingston Parish.

Three recitals are planned this week at the LSU School of Music.

A faculty violin recital by Borislava Iltcheva will begin at 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 21.

Comedian at LSU
Comedian Dan Adhoot will bring his stand-up show to the LSU Student Union Ballroom at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 18.
The Iranian-American Jewish stand-up comedian had appeared on NBC’s The Last Comic Standing and Comedy Central’s Premium Blend.
The show, sponsored by the Union Program Council, is free.
Live At Chelsea’s
A free, family-friendly concert will take place at Chelsea’s Cafe, 2857 Perkins Road, at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 19.
Jazz bassist Harry Anderson will perform.

In Metairie
The Jefferson Performing Arts Society and the Ashe Cultural Center will present The Origins of Life on Earth at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 23, at the Jefferson Performing Arts Center, 400 Phlox St., Metairie.
The production is a multidisciplinary composition for soloists, chanters, chorus and dancers, and explores the contributions the Yoruba People of West Africa have made to New Orleans and Louisiana culture and history.
