SANTA CLARA, Calif., Sept. 19 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Memorial Hospital of Union County in Marysville, Ohio was seeking a networked environment that leverages the speed, reliability, and reach of Ethernet for both wired and wireless. To complement its existing wired network and to create a foundation for advanced applications and flexible guest connectivity, the hospital chose Extreme Networks, Inc.'s solution to help create a resilient, scalable, and secure wireless LAN system for its hospital. The solution operates hospital wide and provides patient and guest access to the Internet as well as eased inventory management for the hospital's IS staff.
Memorial Hospital is a 107-bed independent community hospital located northwest of Columbus. Central to the hospital's mission of being the community's link to quality healthcare is the provision for current medical practices with up-to-date technology. Resulting from cooperation between Extreme Networks(R), integrator NACR, and Memorial Hospital's IS staff, a recent technology upgrade now enables the hospital to provide secure and flexible wireless access for patients and visitors, who may spend long hours there.
Memorial Hospital has also set its future plans to consist of wireless connectivity that supports clinical assessments that are performed by nurses with the use of tablet PCs, this allows for instant information sharing and contributes to the accuracy of records. Additionally, the staff plans to later implement wireless carts on wheels (cows), where equipment can quickly be rolled where it is needed for such tasks as bedside registration in the ER, computerized physician order entry, as well as equipment tracking for IV pumps and wheel chairs throughout the facility.
"We required a Wireless LAN solution that would meet our criteria to be secure, reliable, and scalable for the mix of future applications we plan to support," said Carl Zani, director of information systems at Memorial Hospital. "The Summit(R) WM wireless LAN system from Extreme Networks really performs well and it provides simple management with impressive features."
The solution features Extreme Networks' Summit WM wireless LAN controller and Altitude 350 Access Points, which offer ceiling antennas with a low profile design and an advanced set of features, such as strong encryption for authentication. Customers also have the option to be licensed for enough wireless coverage to switch to redundant systems for thirty days, in the event of controller failure, without an additional licensing cost. The complete solution helps enable the simple deployment of applications that help better patient care on a 24x7 basis while providing access to doctors, nurses, and hospital visitors.
"Memorial Hospital is taking a smooth path to introduce wireless connectivity into its environment while minimizing disruption," said Paul Hooper, chief marketing officer for Extreme Networks. "Extreme Networks' ability to provide a complete and scalable solution means that our customers will be well prepared for today and future wired and wireless requirements."
Extreme Networks' Summit WM wireless LAN solution features its Altitude 350 access points that support 802.11a/b and g technology. Extreme Networks' Summit WM switches provide hospitals with the benefit of centralized management and control, while Altitude access points can deliver plug-and-play installation.
