Listeria Found in Unpasturized Cream

Posted on: Saturday, 22 September 2007, 00:00 CDT

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is recalling Organic Pastures Raw Cream because it may be contaminated with Listeria.

The FDA said the cream, which is unpasteurized, was sold in one-pint plastic bottles coded SEP 14 through SEP 21.

The cream is marketed by Organic Pastures Dairy Company of Fresno, Calif.

The organism Listeria monocytogenes can cause a serious and sometimes fatal disease called Listeriosis in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. It can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women, the FDA said Friday in a release.

The product was sold in retail stores throughout California and was also available worldwide through phone orders, and is not pasteurized.

The bacteria were detected during routine product sampling at the facility. No illnesses have been reported to date, the agency said.
