Nervous System Computer Simulation Created

Posted on: Wednesday, 26 September 2007, 09:00 CDT

U.S. scientists have created a computer simulation that sheds light on how the human nervous system regains communication with muscles after sensory loss.

Georgia Tech and Emory University researchers said their simulation might be used to better diagnose and rehabilitate patients with balance problems or neurological disorders such as multiple sclerosis and Parkinson's disease.

The ultimate goal of rehabilitation is for patients to find the best way to adapt to their particular deficit, said lead researcher Assistant Professor Lena Ting. This finding will change the way we approach rehabilitation.

The research appears in the October issue of Nature Neuroscience.
