Health Canada Approves First Human Trial for Experimental Cancer Drug

Posted on: Wednesday, 26 September 2007, 15:00 CDT

By THE CANADIAN PRESS

EDMONTON - Health Canada has approved a limited human trial for a cancer drug called DCA that has shown promise in studies in rats.

Dr. Evangelos Michelakis says in a letter posted on a University of Alberta website that the agency has approved a Phase 2 trial of the chemical to be conducted at the University of Alberta Hospital.

The researcher says the hospital will begin recruiting up to 50 people with certain types of advanced brain cancer over the next 18 months to take part in the trial.

DCA, which has been used to treat certain rare metabolic disorders in humans, is cheap and can't be patented.

Without a pharmaceutical company funding the drug's development, Michelakis and his team have been fundraising privately, and have raised $800,000 to go towards clinical trials.

The Canadian Cancer Society has warned people not to use the drug until it has been fully tested in humans, after reports some desperate cancer patients were trying to self-medicate with the chemical.
