E-Z-EM Congratulates ACRIN on Completion of Virtual Colonoscopy Study

September 28, 2007
Repost This

E-Z-EM, Inc., (Nasdaq:EZEM) announced today that the American College of Radiology Imaging Network (ACRIN) has completed its National CT Colonography Trial and announced its top line findings. The trial–the largest to evaluate virtual colonoscopy as a primary screening option for colorectal cancer conducted to date–found virtual colonoscopy to be “highly accurate for detection of intermediate and large polyps,” and that the accuracy is comparable to optical colonoscopy. The formal study results have been submitted for publication, and will be presented in greater detail at major medical conferences in the coming months.

Commenting on the announcement, Anthony A. Lombardo, President and CEO of E-Z-EM, said, “We are very pleased with the successful completion of this landmark study. As we have reported earlier, E-Z-EM products — PROTOCO2LTM carbon dioxide insufflation system and Tagitol VTM tagging contrast — were used as the clinical standards in this study, along with the other products in our offerings for virtual colonoscopy. We see the results announced today as important validation for virtual colonoscopy as a screening modality, and of the role E-Z-EM products can play in achieving optimum results for physicians and their patients.

“E-Z-EM has been involved in the development and clinical validation of virtual colonoscopy for over 13 years. Throughout this time, we have supported the development of this modality through numerous research grants and through our support for the Centers of Excellence continuing education program, a program that has trained over 400 physicians from around the world in best practices for virtual colonoscopy.

“We believe that the results released today are an important step toward obtaining Federal reimbursement for virtual colonoscopy as a screening modality, and that such reimbursement is critical to establishing the modality as a screening tool for colorectal cancer. We look forward to working with ACRIN in ongoing support of the modality and in securing reimbursement for screening.”
