OVERLAND PARK, Kan., Oct. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Fort Dodge Animal Health, a division of Wyeth , and the American Association of Feline Practitioners (AAFP) today launched http://www.healthycatsforlife.com/, a Web- based campaign and educational program that provides resources for cat owners and veterinarians. The Web site program stresses the importance of cat wellness and explains the subtle signs of sickness using wellness checklists, flashcards and practical tips on a broad range of feline health care topics.
"With a growing number of people accessing the Internet for information, http://www.healthycatsforlife.com/ is an excellent vehicle to provide consumers with reliable, relevant information," says Margie Scherk, DVM, Diplomate of the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners, certified in feline practice and AAFP president. "This site provides essential information about many issues faced by cats and their care providers, from health and behavioral problems to transporting cats to the clinic, which, for many owners, is an obstacle to routine exams for their cats."
An AAFP report says research indicates negative behaviors, such as damaging furniture or inappropriate elimination, are the most common reasons cats are euthanized. These behaviors may be normal or a sign of sickness in a cat and can be addressed by a veterinarian. Twice-a-year wellness exams can help detect, treat and, ideally, prevent health problems before they become serious.
"Cats are masters at hiding illness and pain," says Ilona Rodan, DVM, Diplomate of the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners, certified in feline practice. "Studies show most cat owners consider their pets to be family members. Recognizing early warning signs helps clients know when to call their veterinarian, keeping their cat more comfortable and healthy."
