Microlife's Home Blood Pressure Monitors Proven Accurate Even for Critical Patients

DUNEDIN, Fla., Oct. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Since the release of the American Heart Association's Recommendations for Blood Pressure Measurement in 2005, more and more physicians and patients are recognizing the need to accurately monitor blood pressure at home. A "true pressure" is defined as the average level over a prolonged duration, thus measurements only taken during office visits are not a reliable indicator of one's "true" blood pressure. According to the American Heart Association patients should only measure at home with a monitor that can prove accuracy through independently validated clinical studies, take 2 or more readings and average the results, record the readings over time and be able to share these measurements with a physician. The study, led by Professor Thomas G Pickering, M.D., shows that Microlife's upper arm monitors are the first oscillometric devices to measure blood pressure accurately against a mercury sphygmomanometer, the gold standard, in this highly critical patient group. According to Professor Pickering, "Patients with End Stage Renal Disease have very stiff arteries, and it has not been clear if oscillometric devices, which are used for home and ambulatory blood pressure monitoring, are accurate in such patients. Blood pressure measured at the time of dialysis may not accurately reflect the overall level of blood pressure in these patients, and home monitoring may prove to be very useful.
