Microlife's Home Blood Pressure Monitors Proven Accurate Even for Critical Patients

Posted on: Tuesday, 2 October 2007, 18:00 CDT

DUNEDIN, Fla., Oct. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Since the release of the American Heart Association's Recommendations for Blood Pressure Measurement in 2005, more and more physicians and patients are recognizing the need to accurately monitor blood pressure at home. A "true pressure" is defined as the average level over a prolonged duration, thus measurements only taken during office visits are not a reliable indicator of one's "true" blood pressure. According to the American Heart Association patients should only measure at home with a monitor that can prove accuracy through independently validated clinical studies, take 2 or more readings and average the results, record the readings over time and be able to share these measurements with a physician. Microlife upper arm digital blood pressure monitors meet all of the recommendations set forth by the AHA. Additionally, in critical patients such as those suffering from end-stage renal disease, who often have diabetes, the need for accurate devices for home blood pressure monitoring has, until now, been seemingly unmet. According to a study published in "Blood Pressure Monitoring" (2007, 12:227-232), Microlife's upper arm monitors are shown to accurately measure pressure, even in patients with severe arterial-sclerosis in End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD).

The study, led by Professor Thomas G Pickering, M.D., shows that Microlife's upper arm monitors are the first oscillometric devices to measure blood pressure accurately against a mercury sphygmomanometer, the gold standard, in this highly critical patient group. According to Professor Pickering, "Patients with End Stage Renal Disease have very stiff arteries, and it has not been clear if oscillometric devices, which are used for home and ambulatory blood pressure monitoring, are accurate in such patients. Blood pressure measured at the time of dialysis may not accurately reflect the overall level of blood pressure in these patients, and home monitoring may prove to be very useful. Our research study demonstrated that the Microlife 3AC1-1PC digital home blood pressure monitor accurately measured blood pressure in patients with ESRD."

The patented algorithm used in the Microlife 3AC1-1PC is the same used in all of Microlife's upper arm monitors. This algorithm earned Microlife an A/A, the highest possible grade in accuracy, according to the British Hypertension Society's protocol as tested by unaffiliated researchers. Dr. Ken Kronhaus, M.D., renowned cardiologist and host of Good Day Health with Dr. Ken, says "Microlife's dedication to continued research and development of their blood pressure monitors make them my first choice when recommending a home monitor to my patients. I am confident that my patients are getting accurate results at home and this study proves it, even in very critical patients with End Stage Renal Disease, where measurement can be difficult."
